What is stump grinding and why do we do it?

Let’s break it down from the start and then get into the reasons and specifics for stump grinding. So what exactly is a stump grinder? Why do we use it? Why is it necessary in our field? So many questions about something we do every week and we are here to share some information about it.

Stump grinding is a service done by Green Cycle Trees in which we use a specialized machine to grind away tree stumps on a property.

A stump grinder is a piece of machinery that can be small enough to manually control or the size of a truck. This all depends on the size of the stump and the space in which the stump needs to be removed. The general stump grinder works with a cycling high speed disk that has metal teeth attached that grinds away at the stump and roots turning it into saw dust/small chips.

The reasons we grind away stumps vary from aesthetic purposes to allowing building space. There are many positives to this service. Trees are extremely resilient and just cutting it down does not mean it is going to die. Some trees will start growing shoots from the stump as the root is still completely intact. When you leave the stump it can also attract many insects while it is rotting away(this self-decaying process will also take a very long time) and these insects could easily make their way to other trees and into your home.

Stump grinding is a necessary service we provide at Green Cycle Trees. Many people don’t want an unsightly stump left behind in their yard after a tree has been felled. This stump could easily become a hazard to you and your family, make it difficult to get your grass mowed and even attract insects like ants that will make a home in the stump.

We try and protect the whole eco system in your yard. We do offer stump poisoning as an alternative to stump grinding to prevent regrowth but do prefer grinding out the stump as we do not like using poisons in our clients’ yards.
